The Legend of Lake Wolfgang
In 982 St Wolfgang secretly left Regensburg and took refuge in the solitude of the Falkenstein where he lived in the cliffs as a hermit. Saint Wolfgang hurled his axe from the Falkenstein outcrop, which apparently embedded, in the high altar, and the spot where it landed is said to be the site on which the church was built. The devil himself is supposed to have helped with the building of the church, as Wolfgang promised him that he could be the first living creature to enter the church, but Wolfgang sent a wolf in first and the devil tore it apart as he was so angry. |
